How to Clean a Burnt Pan Without Scratching It
Share
Burnt rice. Scorched milk. Caramelised sugar welded to your favourite pan.
We've all been there — and the instinct is to grab a metal scourer or the sharp edge of a knife and go at it. But on non-stick, stainless steel or ceramic pans, that instinct is expensive. Scratched coatings, ruined surfaces, and a pan heading for the bin.
Here's how to do it properly.
Step 1 — Soak first
Fill the pan with warm water and a small amount of washing up liquid. Leave it for 10 to 15 minutes. This loosens the burnt layer and makes everything easier.
Step 2 — Scrape, don't scrub
This is where most people go wrong. Scrubbing with abrasive pads removes the burnt food but also removes the coating underneath. Instead, use a non-scratch plastic scraper held at a low angle — almost flat against the surface. Let the edge do the work.
Step 3 — Work in sections
Don't try to clear the whole pan in one stroke. Work in small sections, lifting the burnt food piece by piece. Once you start, it's genuinely satisfying.
Step 4 — Rinse and repeat if needed
Rinse the pan and check what's left. For really stubborn burnt food, a second short soak followed by another scrape will clear almost everything.
Step 5 — Finish with a gentle wash
Once the bulk is off, a normal wash with a soft sponge finishes the job. Good as new.
